School counselors exist to help students develop the academic and social skills that are necessary for long-term success in school. Generally, school counselors help students choose careers, identify strengths, or advance in education.

A typical day in the life of a school counselor might include:
• Evaluating each student's interests and abilities through tests, interviews, and other evaluations
• Helping students achieve goals, both career and academic
• Working with teachers, parents, and administrators to help students achieve future goals
• Helping students cope with behavioral or social problems with counseling.
