Job Requirements of Medical Assistant Ancillary Technician-Optometry:
- High School/GED required
WORK EXPERIENCE/TRAINING/ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Level I
- At least two (2) years of equivalent work experience required if a medical assistant certification is not obtained.
- Level 2
- Must qualify under (at least) one of the below:
- Five (5) or more years’ experience as a medical assistant
- Certified as a medical assistant
- Registered as a medical assistant
- Graduated with a Bachelors in Health Sciences
- Must qualify under (at least) one of the below:
- At least two (2) years medical office experience preferred
- Knowledge of medical office terminology, procedures and equipment preferred
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite preferred
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION
- Certified Medical Assistant or Registered Medical Assistant preferred

Medical Assistant Ancillary Technician-Optometry
Compensation: $22.98-$23.48 hourly dependent on level

The Medical Assistant is part of the person-centered integrated care team and establishes and maintains effective, professional working relationships with patients and their representatives and with medical staff. The Medical Assistant upholds all guidelines set forth in the clinic, maintains strict patient confidentiality, accepts and upholds patient service and satisfaction and assists practitioners and physicians in delivering health care services.
*This is a full-time, benefit eligible position working Monday-Friday 8 AM-6 PM in Optometry.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS – JOB SPECIFIC
- Prepare patients for examination and treatment, including obtaining patient history and vital signs, and documenting in the medical record
- Set up exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments and supplies
- Perform procedures such as venipuncture, urinalysis, EKGs, and others as directed
- Administer immunizations and injections as ordered
- Provide patient education and instruction as directed by the provider
- Maintain and prepare supplies and equipment, including proper sterilization techniques
- Assist physicians and nurse practitioners with minor surgical procedures and physical exams
- Coordinate and schedule tests, treatments, or referrals as needed
- Maintain competency to perform limited X-ray procedures at designated clinics
- Operate X-ray equipment to capture radiographic images of bones, tissues, and organs per physician orders
- Explain X-ray procedures and answer patient questions
- Position patients appropriately, including assisting those with limited mobility
- Minimize radiation exposure using lead shields and other safety measures
- Ensure quality imaging to avoid repeat procedures
- Triage telephone calls, refer appropriately, and document or relay messages as needed
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, files, and documentation
- Adhere to standard precautions, including the use of personal protective equipment and proper handling of infectious waste
- Comply with CLIA and OSHA regulations
- Contribute to maintaining cleanliness of clinic areas and equipment
- Monitor inventory of medical and laboratory supplies; reorder as necessary
- Attend required training sessions mandated by Compass Health, accreditors, and funders
- Uphold ethical and professional standards in all aspects of work
- Perform other duties as assigned to support clinic operations
Optician Responsibilities
- Adjust eyeglass frames for proper fit and comfort
- Prepare orders for glasses and contact lenses, verifying prescriptions and specifications
- Ensure orders are processed accurately and lenses meet prescription standards
- Conduct pre-exam testing such as autorefractor scans, retinal imaging, and patient history
- Interpret and transpose prescriptions as needed
- Advise patients on eyeglass frame selection based on prescription and facial features
- Verify final lens prescriptions and inspect lenses for accuracy and quality
