Description

    The Phlebotomist /Lab Chemist is part of the person centered integrated care team and responsible for the collection, specimen testing and documentation of bodily fluid samples for the purpose of aiding in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. The Phlebotomist /Lab Chemist is also responsible for the maintenance of laboratory equipment, and ensuring that the lab meets and maintains all regulatory requirements. The Phlebotomist/ Lab Chemist establishes and maintains effective, professional working relationships with patients, their representatives and with medical staff. The Phlebotomist / Lab Chemist upholds all guidelines set forth in the clinic, OSHA, and CLIA. Maintains strict patient confidentiality, accepts and upholds patient service, satisfaction and assists practitioners and physicians in delivering health care services.



Core Responsibilities:

  • Collection, testing, and documentation of samples including urine and blood; phlebotomy duties (collect blood samples via venipuncture, finger stick, heel stick, butterfly needles, etc.) as directed and per CLIA and OSHA standards.
  • Responsible for picking up lab test orders from medical staff and transporting blood samples to the laboratory.
  • Verify patient information, enter data in NextGen and instruct patients in a clear manner.
  • Must be familiar with safety protocols regarding the storage and transportation of specimens as well as the proper disposal of all equipment used in venipuncture.

    Specimen Testing
        - Ascertains that specimens from various anatomic sites are correctly collected - Utilizes appropriate preparation, processing and evaluation procedures for all specimens - Accurately evaluates specimens from different anatomic sites for interpretation utilizing appropriate criteria and upholds established performance standards - Maintains appropriate records for specimens, slides, and data – conforming to all state and federal guidelines for laboratory practice - Produces and reports accurate, reliable lab test results in time frames that contribute to effective patient care - Ensures result/report confidentiality; accesses patient information only as required for lab use


    Laboratory Maintenance

      - Performs and evaluates established quality control procedures and takes corrective action when indicated - Assures that laboratory equipment is functioning properly and performs maintenance as indicated - Assures cleanliness of laboratory according to state and federal guidelines - Responsible for ordering and maintaining adequate supplies - Keeps ALL log books and MSDS sheets up-to-date.


    Communication

      - Acts as a member of the Health Care Team and effectively communicates with all members of the team - Responds to questions/inquiries from customers and follows through to ensure a satisfactory outcome


    Other Responsibilities:

    • Adhere to standard precautions, as appropriate, i.e., use protective barriers, handle and dispose infectious waste appropriately, proper hand washing, etc.
    • Assist in maintaining the cleanliness of unit facilities and equipment
    • Monitor laboratory supplies and order when necessary
    • Regular attendance (except as excused)
    • Meet standards of professional ethical conduct
    • Attend all training as required by Crider Health Center, Creditors and Funders.
    • Other miscellaneous duties as assigned

 

Job Requirements

Qualifications

  • Phlebotomy Certificate or Medical Assistant Certificate
  • Minimum of 2 years applicable experience.
  • Ability to draw blood on pediatric through geriatric patients.
  • Knowledge of medical office terminology, procedures and equipment
  • Knowledge of Windows Based Software
  • Certification for Laboratory Professionals
  • ASCP Certification, preferred
  • Working knowledge of OSHA and CLIA laboratory standards and regulations

Supervision

  • The Phlebotomist / Lab Chemist receives supervision from the Medical Services Supervisor - Wentzville.
