The Nurse Supervisor at ROH assumes 8–12-hour accountability for their assigned unit and acts as an interdisciplinary team member responsible for overall coordination of care and services delivered to clients. They work collaboratively with members of the health care team and provides patient/family education. This job is classified as Category I and may involve tasks with exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Assumes 8–12-hour accountability for nursing care to assigned unit
• Routinely provide direct patient care, therapeutic communication, and physical redirection (CALM techniques) for patients who are physically and verbally threatening
• Demonstrates skills required for a registered nurse within scope of practice such as medication administration and assessing for reactions, performing vital signs, giving injections, and performing waived testing activities
• Demonstrates competency to provide age appropriate care to preadolescents (3-12), adolescents (13-17), adults 18 and older including geriatrics. Performs assessment and reassessment of patients coming on shift, throughout shift and before going off duty
• Possess cognitive, organizational and emotional ability and maturity to deal effectively with multiple stressors, deadlines and difficult situations
• Follows hospital staffing protocol. Ensures a sufficient number of staff per shift to ensure quality of care is maintained
• Provides care based on the National Patient Safety Goals
• Monitor, record and report symptoms or changes in patients’ conditions
• Complete and update individualized Plan of Care for all patients based on patient’s responses and conditions
• Ensures patients and guardians understand discharge instructions
• Participates in developing solutions and resolving problems or conflicts by actively participating in team meetings and by listening and appropriately interacting with others
• In the absence of nurse volunteers, prn nurses, flex team nurses secured by reasonable efforts or contracted temporary agency staff and if qualified reassignments cannot be made, the hospital may require mandated overtime to fulfill obligations based on the Missouri Nurse Practice Act to perform patient care, which is required.
• Acts as a preceptor and educator to new employees
• Participates on interdisciplinary team by providing patient information and recommendations to the Treatment Team
• Participates in the hospital’s Continuous Quality Improvement Program by verbalizing results of nursing activities, identifying personal trends and planning for improvements
• Serves as a member of assigned committees
• Completes a minimum of 52 educational activities per year
• Successful and timely completion of required trainings to include, but not limited to, basic life support and CALM
• Maintains standards of Professional Nursing Practice
• Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements

• Associate’s degree in nursing required
• Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred

WORK EXPERIENCE

• At least one year of psychiatric nursing experience required
• Effective verbal, written and non-verbal communication skills required
• Cognitive, organizational and emotional abilities and maturity to deal effectively with multiple stressors, deadlines and difficult situations required

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION: RN valid in Missouri required
