Compensation: $11.92 Hourly

Description:

The Peer Specialist serves as a recovery coach and mentor to those with mental illness.  The Peer Specialist helps individuals who have been diagnosed with a serious and persistent mental illness develop a network for information and support.  The Peer Specialist promotes skills for coping with and managing psychiatric symptoms while encouraging the use of natural resources and enhancing community living.  The Peer Specialist will emphasize opportunities for consumers to support each other as they move forward in achieving goals and objectives in their recovery. 

Core Responsibilities:

  • Understand the five stages in the recovery process and help individuals identify and empower themselves on the following:  building hope, a positive self-image, personal strengths, and trust and responsibility in personal decision-making in their lives.
  • Use their recovery story as it relates to the peer support relationship and be able to discern when and how much of their recovery story to share with others.
  • Communicate with clients the importance of self-care and assist in accessing behavioral, medical, dental, and other healthcare services as needed to achieve this.
  • Train, coach, and support clients in daily living skills, including:  housekeeping, cooking, personal hygiene, accessing transportation, keeping a budget, paying bills and maintaining an independent residence.
  • Provide individual assistance to clients in accessing a variety of public services including financial housing, food, and clothing.
  • Advocate for clients and teach them to advocate for themselves.
  • Participate in the treatment planning process by providing input into recovery goals.
  • Teaching and modeling problem solving and symptom management skills.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Participate as part of a multi-disciplinary team by attending team meetings and providing input to team discussions.
  • Participate in facilitation of educational groups.
  • Maintain agreed upon level of productivity.
  • Complete all required paperwork on time.
  • Will seek culturally competent services and service providers to meet the cultural needs of each client.
  • Assist clients with scheduling appointments, completion of forms, and other similar activities.
  • Transportation of clients as needed
  • Regular attendance (except as excused).
  • Attend all training as required by Crider Health Center, Accreditors and Funders.
  • Miscellaneous duties as assigned by the supervisor.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with arms and hands; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel or crouch; talk and hear.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities of the position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.
